Where in the heck is Golden City????

WHERE IN THE HECK IS GOLDEN CITY?

I have written a couple of blogs on Missouri boys basketball teams in cities around the state where I have had no clue what part of the state they are in.  In fact, doing a ratings blog has given me a much better understanding of Missouri state geography.  I wrote about Zalma, in the bootheel of the state and about the vaunted Dora Falcons whose school is located about 30 miles west of West Plains.  Zalma's basketball team was unremarkable but the name was intriguing.  Dora, of course, has the best basketball team in class one and should go on to a state title these next couple of weeks.

I missed my Green Ridge vs. Golden City pick yesterday by 34 points.  I incorrectly picked Green Ridge to win by 4 and Golden City won by 30!  I went back to re-examine Golden City's record and they are 25-2, having lost only to Weaubleau and Greenwood Springfield, with vaunted Aninum Mohammed.  Of course, now that I mentioned Weaubleau, we are both probably thinking the same thing?  Where in the heck is Weaubleau, too????!!!!

So hat's off to the Golden City Eagles, who moved up from an 83 to a 91 rating but here is the unfortunate thing.  Dora is a 125 rating and if Golden City makes the final against Dora, it will be a 34 point blow-out.  Of course, I was wrong yesterday and I could be wrong by then too.

So how did I do yesterday on my Saturday predictions?  Well, I was surprised, to say the least.  My girls picks went 11-1 for 92% accuracy.  The boys picks went 9-3 for 75% accuracy.  I say I was surprised because I just started the girls ratings in January and I have been doing the boys ratings for three years.  I felt less confident in the girls ratings because I didn't have all their games inputted, but I have been catching up, especially after getting laughed off Twitter by some unkind comments about my girls polls.  I have made amends.  These polls are not perfect and 16 and 17 year old kids are not professionals so they have good and bad nights.  Teams, like Golden City, who should have won by three, win by thirty.  The ratings are fun to develop and they give fans a chance to see how their school ranks in the ENTIRE STATE, something no other poll has done.

So here's my results from yesterday and I will correct my boys polls to reflect Golden City's improved rating.  They still might not beat St. Elizabeth to get to the final but I wish them the best and I hope they make the state final and prove me wrong (not that they beat Dora but that it isn't by 34 points).  Besides, I don't want to make the Falcons mad again and have the whole town "liking" the Luna triplets panning my predictions.  LOL

Here you go.... Class one predictions below and more sectional and state predictions coming in a few days.

History[edit]

Golden City was established in 1867 as a stop on the Butterfield Stagecoach Line. It takes its name from a nearby area known as Golden Grove.[7] In reality the diggings were done by Indians mining an outcropping of exceptionally fine flint. Another rumor for its naming stems from the Indian dig sites, early settlers thought the flint mines were Spanish gold mines. It was re-platted in 1870.[8]
At approximately 9:30 PM on May 22, 2019, an EF-3 tornado struck the city. The storm killed 3 people and injured a few others. Many homes were unsalvageable.[9]
The Golden City Herald served the community from 1881 until Dec. 28, 1972. Dellard Surbrugg published the newspaper and ran a commercial printing business from 1940 until he sold the paper to Gene Wotkiewicz, editor and publisher of the Lockwood Luminary.

Geography[edit]

Golden City is located at 37°23′36″N 94°5′36″W (37.393254, -94.093441).[10]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.03 square miles (2.67 km2), all land.[1]
Golden City is located in the heart of Missouri Tall Grass Prairie country. Several preserved prairies are located within a few miles of town, the most significant of which are the Golden Prairie, the Cook Meadow and the Pennsylvania Prairie.
