Early Look at Missouri Boys District Seedings
The 2019-2020 boys basketball season is coming down very quickly to the play-offs. It seems like the season just started and now the teams are preparing for District play-offs and a run to a state championship. In fact, the class one play-offs start in a little over one week and the other classes follow over the next three weeks.
I sorted the rankings by class and district so you can see my ranking or seeding of teams in these district competitions. The class one seedings are almost completed by the MSHSAA districts and some align and some don't compare well with my ratings. Time will tell.
There are some districts that are very strong and some that aren't.
For class one, the "real" state championship will occur in an early sectional game when a great Dora team (district 4) will face the equally excellent South Iron team (district 3). It should be an epic game that will make the actual state final with the Dora/South Iron winner playing against either St. Elizabeth or Platte Valley seem like an afterthought.
Class five, district 6 also pits two "finalists" in their district championship with CBC and De Smet both being worthy of a state final appearance.
In class four, district 13, Grandview KC and Ruskin have to face off in their district. Either team could be a state finalist.
In class three, district 9, Blair Oaks and Father Tolton will be a "state championship" quality game with either team having a chance to go all the way. Trinity and Cardinal Ritter will face off in a quarterfinal when either could be a state champion finalist.
In class two, Greenwood and Hartville should be in the state championship game but will meet in the first sectional game after districts.
I feel their pain. I was the fourth fastest half miler in the state of Minnesota a long time ago and didn't get to the state meet because the #1 and #2 were in my section and only two qualified to state. The state implemented a qualifying time the next year but it was too late for me.
I don't know how you get the best teams into the state championship? It's too bad that the sectional games couldn't be seeded so that the best teams ended up in the state finals. But districts are set up geographically and that helps keep the costs down. It has always been unfair to large city schools where many highly talented teams can't get out of their district.
