Comparing Gramps Ratings to the MBCA coaches poll

One of the ways that I can improve my statistical ratings is to look at some of the coaches polls that float around the area.  I am sure the reverse in NOT true.  I doubt whether any coaches or tournament seeding committees are looking at my statistically based ratings when the vote or when they seed tournaments.  Maybe someday.....

I looked at Bill Gunn's MoSports.com and found the five classes rated by MBCA coaches.  It looks a lot better than the Max Preps ratings which put much more weight and emphasis on winning records than level of competition and actual head to head results.   Overall, Gunn's rankings are fair with a few exceptions, which I noted below each class ranking.  There were a few teams that I had not collected complete game results so I learned a little too.

Anyway, here's my analysis.  I hope Bill is not too upset by analyzing his coaches poll.  Maybe the coaches will take more notice.  LOL

2019-2020 Boys' Basketball Poll #3 (Release 1/3)
The MBCA Basketball poll is selected by a panel of coaches representing each of the 8 MBCA districts and each of the five Missouri basketball classes.
Class 1 Rating My Rank
1 Dora 121 2
2 South Iron 125 1
3 Mound City 90 14
4 St. Elizabeth 101 4
5 Platte Valley
6 Cairo 97 7
7 Leeton 84 22
8 Mercer 84 23
9 Leeton
10 Princeton 99 6
Others receiving votes: Lesterville 99 5
Comments:    I can't find Platte Valley in class 1.  Leeton is listed twice.  Mercer moved up from 72 to 83.5 rating.
Class 2 Rating My Rank
1 Greenwood 119 1
2 Hartville 112 2
3 Oran 98 3
4 Skyline 105 4
5 Crane 102 6
6 Milan 104 5
7 Van-Far 90 29
8 Bernie 99 10
9 East Buchanan 92 24
10 Crest Ridge 99 12
Others receiving votes: Portageville,
 Mid-Buchanan 97 15
New Franklin 100 7
Thayer 99 13
Comments:   Crest Ridge and Oran were not on my radar but they are both undefeated and winning impressively.  Frankly, Van-Far and East Buchanan have not been impressive.  I would rate New Franklin, Mid-Buchanan and Thayer above both.
Class 3 Rating My Rank
1 Charleston 117 1
2 Blair Oaks 122 6
3 Father Tolton 126 4
4 Cardinal Ritter 130 3
5 Trinity Catholic 134 2
6 Monroe City 103 27
7 Kennett 104 25
8 Lathrop 98 39
9 Palmyra 102 28
10 St. Michael the Archangel 106 16
Others receiving votes:
Lift for Life Academy 118 8
Fair Grove 103 28
Comments:   After a strong start, Charleston lost to St. Dominics in their tournament and barely beat FHC.  Not sure why Lift for Life is so low with Lathrop, Kennett, Monroe City and Palmyra in top 10.  St. Michael had not been on my radar screen.
Class 4 Rating My Rank
1 Vashon 132 1
2 Raytown South 125 6
3 MICDS 126 4
4 Nevada 117 15
5 Cape Central 123 5
6 McCluer 128 2
7 Ladue 119 8
8 Cape Notre Dame 116 23
9 Washington 117 16
10 Grandview (KC) 127 3
Others receiving votes:
Sikeston 118 11
Confluence 118 13
Ruskin 122 7
Comments:   Vashon's shimmer lost a little glitter with their 18 point loss to Memphis Lausannne.  Nevada has some good wins and some not so good wins.  Cape ND and Washington are good but not as good as Grandview, Siketons and Confluence.  Ruskin is very solid and should be in the top 10
Class 5 Rating My Rank
1 Chaminade 140 1
2 Mehlville 140 2
3 DeSmet 134 3
4 CBC 133 4
5 Francis Howell 132 5
6 Kickapoo 116 18
7 Raymore Peculiar 123 12
8 Liberty 125 8
9 Webster Groves 127 6
10 Staley 120 15
Others receiving votes:         Hazelwood Central 118 19
Comments: Other than Kickapoo and Ray-Pec, this is a pretty solid rankings.  Liberty KC, William Chrisman and Rockhurst deserve more mention out west.  Hazelwood West is better than their 3-5 record and will breakout in January.
